Opening Remarks by Troy Schneider, President, Content Brands, GovExec

Michael Adams will kick off the event and introduce our Opening Government Keynote, Bakari Dale, Director of Office of Enterprise Data Analytics and HAL, U.S. Army. This session will discuss the ways the Army is using AI and RPA and how the Deep Green Initiative is providing new tools and using challenges that allow the Army to address complex challenges.

This session will provide an update on the progress The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) has been making with researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute, to operationalize the Department of Defense (DoD) Ethical Principles for Artificial Intelligence on DIU programs. This session will discuss the initial Responsible AI Guidelines that the DIU released in November 2021, along with worksheets to support their implementation. It will also describe how industry can employ these principles in their work with government.

Chandler will explain the importance of AI for the government and how AI technologies will shape government operations moving forward.

In this talk, we discuss (a) several ways in which Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to support national security (b) how the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) supports those objectives by engaging with innovative companies and (c) how the Responsible AI Guidelines developed at DIU can be applied to help align individual projects with the DoD AI ethical principles.
